Ask / your own questions
Bring your questions to the care visit.
Start with the health problem you want help with. Ask who will check your health and what happens next.
What brought you to the visit?
Start with what you want help with. Bring your current medicine and supplement list, past treatment notes, and any records you want to discuss.
- What do I want to change?
- What have I tried already?
- What would make care worth the time and cost to me?
- Telehealth
- Telehealth means a health visit at a distance, using tools such as video or a phone call.
- Assessment
- An assessment is the work your doctor or other licensed person providing medical care does to understand your health before choosing treatment.
Would an in-person visit or phone or video care fit?
Ask how the visit happens and who checks your health. Ask how you can ask questions as well as answer them.
- As of September 2026, Florida requires the same standard of care by phone or video as in person. The person treating you must also write up the care in your medical record.
- For weight treatment, Florida’s rule requires a review of your medical history, a physical check and related tests before treatment starts, as of September 2026. The rule does not require that first visit to be in person.
- Ask what can be checked by phone or video and what needs a test or an examination in person.
- The federation of state medical boards says your treating professional must set up any needed tests or an in-person visit that phone or video care cannot provide.
What can you expect from the conversation?
Ask the person treating you to explain your health problem and choices in words you understand.
- The federation of state medical boards’ May 2026 guidance says a treatment menu alone does not count as an assessment.
- The same guidance says you must be able to contact your treating professional with questions after the visit.
- Why choose this option over the others?
- What would change if I waited or chose no medicine?
- What result would we look for, and when would we talk again?
What happens after the visit?
Before the conversation ends, ask for a next step you can describe back.
- Who explains the plan if a word is unclear?
- How do I get a written plan?
- Who follows up, and what does that cost?
- What happens if no medicine is prescribed?
